Frederick County Assists MD DNR

with Mountain Fire in Allegany

Frederick County Wildland Fire Crew (FCWFC), Wildland 7

was called up by Maryland DNR for assistance with a mountain fire,

off Gap Rd. in Flintstone MD.  FCWFC departed Middletown VFD

at 0519hrs, and arrived at the Flintstone VFD prior to the 0700hrs briefing.

The FCWFC operated under direct supervision of Incident Commander,

Randy, Crew Boss, Eric, and Squad Boss, Cody.  The crew was split up for a
short time and had been supervised by the
State Fire Supervisor Monty, and
Western Region Fire Manager Ric.

Initial cause was human, open burning of debris by a home owner.

The fire was contained to 13.4 acres of woodland, with a fuel of mostly

leaf litter and downed timber.  Some hot spots were encountered in stumps

and heavy rock areas. The elevation at Incident Command Post (ICP) is about

1038 ft and at the pipe line (state line) the elevation is 1348 ft.

Coordinates: 39° 43’ 21”N,  78° 32’ 32”W (NAD27)

While operations were running smoothly, there was a temporary interruption due to an ATV crash.  FCWFC stepped up and delivered
EMS care to a PA.DCNR
crew member, since the FCWFC were the
only EMT’s  on site for immediate utilization.
Both MD DNR and
PA DCNR were appreciative for the care provided to the
injured crew
member.  No other injuries had been reported.

The FCWFC operations consisted of dry mop-up, cold trailing, and some

water application.  Operations wrapped up approximately 1545hrs. and

DNR was very thankful for the assistance Frederick County provided.

The FCWFC  members are responders from Middletown,

Braddock Heights, New Midway, and Libertytown VFD’s.

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for the assistance provided by the Frederick County Wildland Fire Crew on March 31 at the Gap Road Wildfire in Allegany County. Our agency was in great need of additional wildland-trained firefighters to assist and relieve our personnel that had been fighting numerous wildfires for 48 hours with minimal rest periods. I was having difficulty mobilizing enough personnel for the March 31 operational period. The six members of your wildland crew were a great relief to me and our personnel who had staffed the fire during the first operational period. They did an excellent job in helping us to completely control this fire. They worked in very steep, rocky terrain, inaccessible by vehicle.

During the suppression effort on March 31, a firefighter with the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry sustained injuries while operating an ATV. Since the wildland crew members were EMT’s, they were able to assist a great deal with this injured firefighter. Jamie performed a patient assessment and monitored the patient’s vital signs while awaiting the arrival of the ambulance.

All of our personnel that were involved with the Gap Road Wildfire were in agreement that the Frederick County Wildland Fire Crew is a tremendous asset to the Department of Natural Resources Forest Service. We have endured continual budget reductions and loss of personnel for several years and must now turn to other firefighting organizations in order to get the hazardous work of wildfire suppression done. The trained firefighters of your crew help us do this in a safe and professional manner. Please extend our heartfelt thanks to the crew.

Sincerely,

Richard
